Book Review - Girl, Serpent, Thorn by: Melissa Bashardoust & Kiss Number 8 by: Colleen Venable

 

 I recently finished a new Young Adult Fiction book by Melissa Bashardoust called Girl, Serpent, Thorn. It was an amazing fantasy novel with a fairy tale twist. The mail character is a princess or monster depending on who you ask and the story follows her as she tries to break her curse and find her place in her kingdom. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire book and had me staying up way past my bedtime to see what happened next. I love that this book took the traditional female princess role and flipped it with this curse. It covers family secrets, despair, hope, love, heartbreak, and evil all in 322 pages!

My next recently read recommendation is by Colleen Venable called Kiss Number 8. This Young Adult Graphic Novel follows a girl in high school as she discovers who she really is. It takes a few kisses to get to the one that makes her realize where her heart really is and the journey of heartbreak she goes through to get to that discovery. This book took me right back to that time in my life and reminded me that even when things seem like they cannot get any worse, they will change. Life is funny like that and what you think is the most important thing in the world right now, you might not even remember 5,10, 15 years from now. 299 pages goes faster than you think with this book.

The more you know....

  By: Miss Megan I am getting excited for the first official Teen Book Club event, September 29, 2020!  Getting everything together for Kindness month has really opened my eyes to the power kindness has in this world.  Being the very best version of yourself is something that all of us should strive for in life.  Being the best version of yourself requires not only having healthy habits to keep a healthy body, but a healthy mind as well.  You ALL have talents and gifts that you can share with your friends and family. Sometimes all it takes is making another person smile or offering to help, when you see the need.   When someone looks or believes different than you, remember to embrace those differences, not to be scared of them or push them away. Book Review - Ghost Boys by: Jewell Parker Rhodes - October's Teen Book Club choice

 Ok, guys, this book was so good. This book is October's Teen Book Club book as well. I read this over the summer when I was really looking to diversify my world of author's in order to have a super selection for Teen Book Club this year. Jewell Parker Rhodes is one of the best writers I have ever had the pleasure of reading. This book is not too long and a very quick read. However, don't let that fool you. It packs a punch. I don't want to give away spoilers, so I have to be careful what all I reveal here. Basically the book follows a young black boy named Jerome who is shot and killed by the police. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. His ghost is stuck after what happened and along his journey as a ghost he meets other "ghost boys" who were also murdered because of the color of their skin, throughout history.  A gut wrenching story because it hits so close to home with the times we are living in today.
